4 December 1999 - Saturday - Panama City

We have the whole three days of handling with the formalities concerning Antica's passing through the Panama Canal. Tomorrow morning at 5:00 we are taking a guide to help us enter the canal.

We were very busy those passing days preparing the yacht for this special sail. During our stay in Panama we had many chances of visits and return visits of Polish character. We were invited to a very exclusive meeting in the Espania-Continental Hotel which was dedicated to the anniversary of Poland's liberation. The Polish emigrants, Panama authorities and a Polish folk band all took part in the ceremony. We also met the old friends from our previous expedition Mrs and Mr Janik. Mrs Janik had baked a very tasty bread especially for us.

One incident from the latest part of the sail from Cocos Island is worth mentioning, namely the visit of the American Coast Guard on board . They were accompanying us for several hours before getting on board waiting for the yacht control permission of the Polish government. the visit was over at 4 a.m.

The crew has changed, Rafal stayed and Wojtek from Chicago arrived bringing lots of Polish dainties along. Young people from the USA and Belgium are going to stay on board while sailing through the Panama Canal. The regulations are such that there have to be 5 persons on board while passing through the canal. Antica will pass the canal for the second time in its history, this time from the west to the east. We are looking forward to meeting Capt. Krzysztof Baranowski in Colon. He should reach it on his yacht Lady B. Antica will spend two following weeks sailing on the San Blas archipelago - the land of Kuna Indians - one of the most unique places in the world. We are planning the return trip to Colon for 23.12.99 when Rafal who spent 4,5 months on board and Wojtek whose holiday is finishing will leave the yacht.

And then what? The unknown - I have no crew for Antica for the time of Christmas and New Year.

Capt. Jurek W±sowicz
